  • NigerStar 7 has been supporting the St. John’s Educational Project by sponsoring 20 children for the last five years covering their school fees, uniform and books as well as after-school activities and healthcare.

The St. John’s Nursery and Primary School is a Catholic School run by the Italian NGO AVSI.

It is located in the extremely under developed village of Ikorodu, lacking basic amenities such as roads, electricity and drinkable water. AVSI has worked with this community for 20 years.

The school fees of all 450 pupils at the school are sponsored through distance support.

    PARTNERSHIP
Subsea in Nigeria and NigerStar7 supports the Proprietors of AVSI, a non-governmental and non-profit organization whose main objective has been to cater for indigent children to achieve the basic primary education in the rural community of Oreta in Ikorodu Local Government area, Lagos State, Nigeria.

    SOCIAL CONTEXT AND ISSUES
The 2006 National School Census (NSC) revealed a net enrolment ratio (NER) of 80.6% suggesting that a substantial proportion (19%) of primary school age population (6-11 years) are not enrolled in primary schools nationwide. This represents about 5 million Nigerian children aged 6-11 years old that do not have access to primary education.

  • DESCRIPTION
Over the years, the people of Oreta in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State have dealt with the non-availability of a sound Nursery and Primary School to cater for the basic education needs of the indigenes. The absence of this basic need drew the attention of AVSI, a nonprofit and non-governmental organization. AVSI’s objective is to contribute to human and social development in the lives of the children living in this vicinity through provision of basic education.

Being a non- profit organization, AVSI has sought support from entities who have supported the goal of the Nigerian Government in achieving the ‘Education for all by the year 2020’.
